The Promoting Pacific Island Nature-based Solutions (PPIN) project, implemented by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) in partnership with IUCN, GGGI, and SPC under the Resilient Ecosystems for Climate Change Adaptation (RECCA) programme funded by the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT), supports Pacific Island Countries to mainstream Nature-based Solutions (NbS) into policy, planning, and national systems.
Across Fiji, Tonga, and Vanuatu, the PPIN policy mainstreaming component has supported the development of policy tools, technical assessments, stakeholder engagement processes, and regional knowledge exchange to strengthen the integration of NbS into national systems and climate adaptation planning.
Under the PPIN Project, Fiji’s policy mainstreaming work has delivered two distinct but complementary outputs:
1. Sector-Specific Policy Tool
Development of a Natural Resource and Environmental Management Policy for the iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB), which integrates NbS principles into customary land management, land-use planning, and leasing systems. This policy addresses a key gap in ensuring environmental safeguards within land development processes and supports more sustainable and climate-resilient land management approaches.
2. National Policy Framework Assessment (NPFA)
Assessment of coastal resilience and forestry sector frameworks, identifying how NbS is currently reflected and where improvements are needed to strengthen integration across national policy and planning systems.
Together, these outputs provide both practical guidance for implementation (policy) and strategic insight for policy alignment (NPFA).
In addition to Fiji’s national policy outputs, this event will serve as a regional platform bringing together representatives from Fiji, Tonga, and Vanuatu to reflect on the broader PPIN policy mainstreaming work undertaken across the three countries. The event will provide an opportunity to share technical experiences, lessons learned, implementation challenges, and future opportunities for scaling NbS policy mainstreaming approaches across the Pacific region.
Event Purpose and Objectives
To convene PPIN country representatives and partners to reflect on the overall policy mainstreaming component of the project
The event will bring together representatives from Fiji, Tonga, and Vanuatu, alongside regional partners and stakeholders, to reflect on the implementation of the PPIN policy mainstreaming activities across the three countries. This will include sharing key achievements, lessons learned, technical experiences, and challenges encountered throughout the project. To promote regional learning and exchange on NbS policy integration approaches
The event will provide a platform for countries and partners to exchange experiences and reflect on approaches used to mainstream NbS into national policy and planning systems, including stakeholder engagement processes, technical assessments, and policy development pathways. To present key policy outputs and technical findings developed under the PPIN project
The event will showcase the major deliverables produced through the PPIN policy mainstreaming work, including Fiji’s TLTB Natural Resource and Environmental Management Policy and the National Policy Framework Assessments (NPFA), while also highlighting outputs developed in Tonga and Vanuatu. To facilitate dialogue on future opportunities for scaling NbS policy mainstreaming across the Pacific
The event will create space for strategic discussions on how the lessons, tools, and approaches developed under PPIN can be strengthened, replicated, and scaled both within participating countries and across other Pacific Island Countries and Territories. To formally hand over Fiji’s policy deliverables to national stakeholders
A formal handover ceremony will mark the transfer of Fiji’s policy outputs to national stakeholders, signalling the completion of the PPIN policy mainstreaming work in Fiji and supporting transition toward implementation. To strengthen regional collaboration and partnerships on NbS integration
The event will reinforce collaboration among governments, regional organisations, technical partners, and stakeholders working to mainstream Nature-based Solutions into policy and planning systems across the Pacific.
